Hours and schedule may vary due to operational needs. Reporting to the Pathologists’ Assistant II, Supervisor or Manager, the Pathology Assistant I is directly responsible to pathologists for the quality of their work and will work in close collaboration with and under the guidance of pathologist medical staff in all matters relating to tissue examination. The candidate will prepare and perform gross surgical specimen dissection according to standard operating procedures (SOPs) up to and including level six. Confirms pertinent and appropriate clinical information. Prepare frozen tissue sections under direction of staff Pathologists and performs cryotomy when required. Responsible for tumor banking and ancillary testing and/or other procedures under guidance from staff Pathologists. Operate, maintain, and perform basic troubleshooting of all instruments, equipment and procedures including the imaging and mapping of tissue specimens. Provides instruction and collects specimens ensuring sample integrity. Performs all quality control and assurance practices and maintains records as required. Monitors and maintains department supply inventory. Responds appropriately to non-conforming events and unusual situations. Identifies when to refer more complex issues or problems to the immediate Supervisor. Collaborates on the preparation of manuals and SOP. Organize and maintain specimens as per retention guidelines. Ensures annual competencies are completed within specified timelines. Maintain, clean, decontaminate and organize work areas based on established SOPs. Files, retrieves, and discards specimens/blocks/slides with a high degree of accuracy. Participates in the training and orientation of students, residents and staff and evaluates their progress. Provides coverage at other sites as required. Perform other related duties as required.

As a Pathologists' Assistant I, you will perform gross examination (describe, dissect and document) specimens from biopsy and surgical procedures, selecting sections for processing. You will work in close collaboration with and under the supervision of pathologist medical staff in all matters relating to tissue examination, dissection, and staff/resident training and evaluation. You will assist Pathologists or Residents in the performance of Hospital-ordered autopsies, including receiving and preparing remains.

Required Qualifications:

Master's Degree of Pathologists' Assistant or equivalent combination of education and experience recognized by the Canadian Association of Pathologists for Canadian Certification Council of Pathologists' Assistant (CCCPA) certification. Active or eligible for certification with the Canadian Certification Council of Pathologists' Assistants (CCCPA).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum 1 year Pathology Assistant experience in Anatomic Pathology. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite programs. Working knowledge of Connect Care Beaker Module. Intermediate knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology and medical terminology. Ability to work with and be exposed to chemical agents and gloves. Any Canadian equivalency to English 30 or 33 or CLBA score of Benchmark 8, completed within the last 6 months.

Preferred Qualifications:

Minimum 3 years PA related experience at an urban site. Grossing surgical specimens up to Level VI is considered an asset. Completion of an accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program. ASCP-PA Certification. Basic understanding of CPSA Accreditation requirements. Promotes a team environment and respectful workplace. Completion of leadership courses is an asset. Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
